This time of year is about celebrating the belief that there is something bigger than us and that in some way or another we are all connected.

We run around putting up lights or some of us a tree and there is a lot of shopping and eating and celebrating, but behind all of this tinsel and eggnog is the fact that the holiday is a time that people want to connect. We will drive through snow, fly overseas and wait in long, long lines just to be with family and friends. To be a part of something. There is history in our celebration.

Regardless of your beliefs this is the time to connect, to give, to love, to believe in something far bigger than what we see and what we can touch.

This is the holiday.

In the words of our friend the Grinch “What if Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more.”

Therapeutic power of YOGA

Yoga by nature is therapeutic and has healed and transformed the lives of many people for many years. However, over the last 5 years, we've seen "Yoga Therapy" become it's own discipline. Health care practitioners are including yoga techniques in their healing modalities. Western physicians and physiotherapists are prescribing yoga to patients to assist in the healing process for everything from PTSD, chronic pain, acute injuries to specific diseases, like cancer, crohns and other auto immune diseases. The effects of yoga have been studied by a number of different universities and fascinating articles have been published on the power of this practice for healing. We at believe deeply in the power of yoga to heal and transform and we're blessed to have Leanne Kitteridge's teachings on our site. This Day

This day of Remembrance should be a daily practice. This day to honour and remember those who walked the earth before us and fought for our freedom and those that right in this very moment are also fighting for peace should be a reminder on how we show up daily.  To show up peacefully in all we do, to behave in a way that creates peace for those around us and to treat ourselves with peace. 

As I walked away from the school assembly yesterday I felt a huge responsibility. A responsibility to these hundreds of children that are singing and dancing and asking for peace. All children want and all children should have peace, freedom and love. We are born knowing and needing this and somewhere along the way it can get lost. It is up to us as adults to live in a way that helps these children to continue to strive for peace, to see the good first and to honour the lives that have been lost or forever changed because of conflict.

It is a daily practice. It is moving, breathing and talking in a way that would make past, present and future peace keepers proud. It is our responsibility to take what we have been given and treat it with respect, knowing it is a gift.

May we all have freedom, may we all have peace and may we all have love.

Teacher Feature - Anne Jones

We want to tell you more about the incredible teachers on our website, so we've decided to do a variety of teacher features. 
We thought it fitting to begin with Anne Jones, as she was one of the first teachers to sign on with us and has been a staple ever since. We lovingly call her "30 min Anne" because of the various 30 minute classes she has on

Anne is not only a yoga teacher but she's also a Registered Massage Therapist, experienced Zumba fitness instructor, personal trainer, and ex-competitive dancer with more than 10 years dance experience. She works and lives in Surrey, B.C with her fiancĂ© Mat and fur babies Kenzie (dog) and Mokie (cat). 

Anne's number 1 goal is to help people feel good and live healthy lives. One of the driving forces behind this goal stems from when Anne was born. She was born with a musculoskeletal condition that required surgery at 10 months old. She has been fighting her body back into alignment and ease ever since and found yoga to relieve her pain more than anything else. You can experience your own relief with a variety of Anne's yoga videos. 

Anne's not only known for her physical ability (she sure is fit) but also her vast knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics and different approaches to functional movement and rehabilitation. We can't say enough good things about Anne and her contribution to the yoga community as a whole. 

Now go enjoy one of her classes. We personally love her "Hamstring class for beginners"class or her "cross training for life" class.

Who would be if no one ever told you who you are?

Halloween is here and once again we get to dress up freely and become an aspect of ourselves that we may not feel like revealing on any other Saturday. Now I am not suggesting that if you dress up as a Ninja or a Princess that you have a deep desire to be a Ninja or Princess but I am curious if there is some little part of you that would like to sneak around in a black bodysuit or eat cake with a jeweled crown. A small little part? ( I would!!)

I think the thing that most comes to light is the aspect of play and bringing back that childhood freedom of being who you choose to be regardless of what you are told or who you think you should be. Something that can be missing from the everyday. A chance to put on a mask or wear something you don't normally get to and be silly and play.

I hope this weekend you and your families have a safe, silly and playful weekend.

Remember your first?

On occasion to gather perspective and reflect on the lessons I've learned from my past, I go back into my archives and remember the first time I ever went to a yoga class.

It was literally a life changing experience. I remember being nervous with the other students in class and unsure about the yoga mat beneath me. I couldn't take my eyes off the teacher and was in awe of his presence and the things he was saying. I remember gasping for air once we got to Surya Namaskara B (sun salutation B) and shaked like a leaf in Down Dog, which the teacher described as a "resting pose".

"Holy shit, this is a RESTING POSE!)", I screamed in my head.

As class progressed, I continued to watch the other students in the room and was inspired by their focus and ability to move gracefully within their bodies. I remember feeling insecure with my body. When we finally (75 mins later) laid down for Savasana (corpse posture), I collapsed in a pile of my own sweat an wept. Literally bringing to the surface years of pent up sadness and self loathing. That moment in Savasana, I remembered how badly I wanted to live a life full of love and feel apart of the greater whole. I now, in this moment, remember, I am loved and apart of the greater whole.

Heart & Lotus

We're back - yes it's been awhile since we posted and we can't wait to share with you all that's been going on over the last few months. To get the ball rolling, we have a fabulous interview with a local BC jewelry company called Heart & Lotus. This fair trade local company is owned and operated by Kim Green and here's what inspires her......

1. Tell us about you and your business?
I believe our capacity for joy is limitless and that life is supposed to be fun. I live my life and run my business in a way that feels good and is in line with my heart. The name of my company (Heart and Lotus) is reflective of this, and what I do: design jewelry to uplift and inspire. Each piece I design is paired with a positive affirmation and meaningful message to be used as a touchstone; a reminder that joy is our true nature and happiness is a choice.

2. How does Yoga inspire or motivate your business?
Yoga is so much more than what takes place on my mat. It’s a way home to myself. Yoga is a way of life; it influences and motivates me in every aspect of it, which of course, includes my business.

3. Tell us about a typical day in your shoes?
My days vary a lot. I work from home and I revel in the freedom that brings. Typically, a day includes: creating new designs. Computer work. Yoga. Speaking with clients. Walking in nature with my dog, Shasta. Meditation. Healthy food. Laughter (lots of laughter!) Spontaneous dance parties. And always trying my best to stay present and follow my heart.

4. How do you rejuvenate when life gets busy or you get overwhelmed?
I come back to my breath. That’s key for me. Pranayama exercises work wonders for that. If possible, I also lie down on the floor or do some yoga poses, like legs-up-the-wall or restorative cobbler’s pose. A walk in the woods always helps put things back in perspective as well.

5. Do you have any daily rituals or personal mantras that serve you?
Rituals are important to me. They help me implement positive habits and make it easier for me to stay grounded. I begin and end the day with gratitude and meditation. I take the time every morning to set my intentions, a very powerful and effective practice. I use positive affirmations and mantras throughout the day. Some of my favourites are, “All is well” and “I am open and receptive to all the love and abundance in the universe – Thank you life!”

6. How do you find Balance in your life both personally and in business?
When I’m out of alignment with my heart, life feels out of balance. When I take the time to listen to my inner guide and do things from a place that feels good, I feel in balance. Really, it’s the only way for me. It takes a lot to remember, trust and accept, that wherever I am is exactly where I am meant to be in that moment. It’s not always easy, but it’s something I believe, deeply, and that brings me balance and peace.

7. Tell us of a personal or business struggle that lead to personal growth or empowerment.
I used to think I wasn’t flexible enough to become a yoga teacher. Even though I knew it wasn’t true, deep down I was afraid of what other people would think of me if I couldn’t “do” all the poses in an “acceptable” way. This ate me up for a really long time because my heart was telling me to do the training and my mind was saying, “You aren’t good enough!” I finally had an “aha!” moment one day, in a yoga class. I saw that this belief stemmed from when I was a little girl. A family member once told me that her doctor said flexibility was hereditary and it simply didn’t run in our family. I grew up believing I wasn’t flexible, biologically. I also recognized that inflexibility, on some level, was actually a fear of change. This realization allowed me to let go of what was holding me back from my dreams. By shining light on these old, conditioned beliefs I was able to release them. I stopped being so hard on myself and began to open up to the possibilities ahead. My body opened up too, more than it had in years. I’ve been happily teaching yoga for over 3 years now. I still can’t fold myself into a pretzel and sometimes my students can

go deeper into poses than I can. That’s okay with me. If I get there, or not, doesn’t matter to me anymore - that’s the best part of it all.

8. What does being a Yogi/Yogini mean to you?
Joyously navigating the roadmap home to ourselves. And being okay with wherever we are on the journey, every step of the way.

Seatbelt Effect

We have all had this happen. You are in a car when the car stops and your seatbelt tightens and you go to loosen it but it just gets tighter. So you pull harder and faster and it gets tighter. So tight that you want to scream so you yank really hard and really fast while getting super frustrated!!! You know what I'm talking about right? I am often guilty of this.....

It is not until we stop resisting and soften that the seatbelt releases and we can stretch the strap away from us and have more space and freedom.

Like in life and also in our asana practice, sometimes the more we resist the tighter and harder things become. It's not until we stop, take a breath and soften that we are able to open up, create more space and invite freedom.

Maya Angelou said that "You can learn a lot about a person by the way they handle these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights."

I agree but would like to add........a stubborn seatbelt.

Lakota Prayer

I recently shared this prayer in my yoga class and had a few people join me in my love of these words. I wanted to share with you as I love this prayer and keep a copy close where I often come back to it.

Lakota Prayer

Great Mystery, teach me how to trust my heart, my mind, my intuition, my inner knowing, the senses of my body, the blessing of my spirit.

Teach me to trust these things so that I may enter my sacred space and love beyond my fear, and thus walk in balance with the passing of each glorious sun.

Through the breath

Below is a really well written passage from a powerful yoga teacher, Max Strom. He, as I do, know very closely the power of deep conscious breathing and it's ability to help us heal. I've attached a short video, teaching you how to practice Nadi Shodhana (Alternative nostril breathing). It's a powerful breath technique that helps balance out our nervous system. It's great to do any time of day, for any reason, for any and everyone. I hope that you will not only try it, but commit to it over the next month (or year), for really we see the greatest change with time and dedication.  

"A key principle of healing is to understand that we imprison emotions from our past in our body, our heartbreaks, trauma, and shame. Then we wait for a prince or maiden to rescue us from our self-built dungeon. Song after song has been written of this longing. Friends visit us at the barred door of the cell and give us some comfort, advice, and camaraderie, but they cannot release us. The key to the door is possessed by only one person, you. We are told this again and again but we do not believe it. This is why breath work is critical. Through breath work, your emotions can be lifted up above the horizon. Once above the horizon, you can see them and begin to understand and put your feelings into context. When you begin to understand your feelings, you cease to be afraid of them. Once unafraid, you begin to heal. Reconciling the past will free you to build a new future and to truly release old damaging relationships. This will open the door, finally, to new healthy relationships."

Yogi said........ what?

Ok let’s admit it, because most of us have been there. What did that yoga teacher just say? Or was that a sneeze?

Here is my list of some of the things that yogis say or talk about that you may have heard and may or may not have questioned.

Namaste: This is an ancient Sanskrit greeting but translates close to: The light or spirit in me bows to (or salutes) the light or spirit in you. Or I bow to the God in you. We are all one.   

Anjali Mudra: Mudra means seal or sign in Sanskrit. While some mudras may use the entire body most are with the hands and fingers and by placing in a certain form will make an energetic seal. Anjali Mudra is with hands at the heart, palms together, thumbs into sternum.  This represents a returning to ones own heart, a connection of left and right hemispheres, and with the divine. Namaste is most often said while using this mudra and they go beautifully together.

Kombucha: This effervescent drink is made from fermented tea by using a colony of yeast and bacteria called a SCOBY. It is sold in most grocery stores and comes in lots of flavours.

Asana: This is the Sanskrit word for posture. It is used when the body is positioned in a posture to improve flexibility and strength to prepare for meditation and remain seated for long periods of time.

Vinyasa: My favourite definition of Vinyasa is linking the movement of the physical body with breath. If you take a Vinyasa in class it often refers to a series of postures that are linked through a flow of movement and guided by breath.

Savasana: More than a nap, savasana is translated into corpse pose and is the final relaxation posture or asana in a lot of yoga practices. You can take this important posture by laying on your back with arms at your sides and closing your eyes.

Just Breath!

I'm reverent about breathing. Particularly in a hatha yoga practice. Mainly because deep breathing has been a game changer for me. Deep conscious breathing has helped me manage my anxiety and battles with depression. It's helped me find depth in yoga asana (postures) and it's helped me when the natural contracts or struggles of life occur. The breath in my opinion is our number 1 resource. This is one of the reasons I was motivated to put this short video together explaining one of my favourite and simplest breathing techniques, called 3 part breath. In Between

Last weekend at my daughter's dance competition one of the judges got up on stage before the awards and offered some advice to the many dancers. She told them to become very aware of all the little steps that they take to get in and out of the big grand postures or moves. And to give as much life and dance into these transition moves as they do the big moves.

I really love this. This applies when we are both on and off our yoga mats. On our mats we can get caught up in the big postures maybe even holding our breath until we arrive. We may forget to let our breath guide our body through the ins and outs that lead us to these bigger postures or forget to be aware of how our body feels and reacts as we move from one pose to the next. Sometimes the in-betweens may even become routine.

This also may happen in our day to day, as we rush around from one event to another and we miss the moments in between. These are missed opportunities to connect with breath and notice how we feel or just pause and enjoy the life going on around us as we move through to the next big event or thing on our to do list.

There is as much joy and inspiration in these in-between moments as there is in the grand move or event or posture, in fact there may be much more if we start to treat these moments that take us in and out with the same amount of awareness and consideration that we give the others.

Power of Aloha

I've been recharging in the Hawaiian Sun the last two weeks and have been inspired by the Hawaiian spirit. The locals call it the power of Aloha. So in honour of that and the recent Spring transition, here's an inspiring Hawaiian proverb.

The Dove and the Grasshopper

This is an Indian Fable I recently read that I really enjoyed and want to share with you.

The Dove and the Grasshopper

ONE day a grasshopper was sporting gaily in a green meadow. A dove on an adjacent tree saw it, and, being tempted to eat it, came down. The grasshopper saw the object of the dove, but remained where it was, without moving an inch.

The dove, being surprised at this conduct of his victim, said, "Hollo! how is it you are not afraid of me?" 

"Because," said the grasshopper, "you will do me no harm."

"This surprised the dove more, and he said, "How so?"

"I'll tell you how; you love your mate, do you not? Well, even so, I love mine. Should a hunter catch you in his net now, would you not be sorry? So, if you should seize me, 'I should be sorry. If he should let you go, without doing you any harm, would you not be glad? Well, even so, I shall be glad if you let me go without doing me any harm."

These words touched the heart of the dove, and he let the grasshopper go without doing him any harm, saying, "As you feel, so do I."

When the good err, tell them so: it helps them, and helps you too

I read this and think. We are one.

Picture this

Isn't it fascinating how obsessive our society is right now on taking, posting and commenting on pictures and videos?

It has me thinking about why we take pictures. We take pictures to capture the moment. So we can later look back at that picture and remember the people we were with, the feelings we had and the experience it all came from. It invokes a memory, a feeling, an experience.

What's fascinating about the whole thing is that I see so many people get stressed and worked up about taking the picture that it interferes with the moment, the feeling, the experience. They're missing out on the whole reason why they are taking the picture. I've even found myself taking a billion different shots because I'm trying to get the "perfect" one. What is that? The perfect picture that represents this moment. How do you do that? Is that possible?

Well I sure don't have all the answers but I do know that I'm working on staying in the present moment myself and not letting the need to capture the occasion, so I can post it up on Instagram take me out of the preciousness of what I'm experiencing. Hopefully this post will inspire you to do the same. That the next time you find yourself desperately digging for your smart phone, so you can take a picture that you'll stop, step back and simply embrace what is going on in the moment and trust that that is enough.

Everything you need is within you.

A few days ago my 6 year son came home from school with a friend of his. They went outside to play soccer but ended up sitting in the sun on the deck having a snack chatting. Before I knew it my son had his knitting with him and was busy knitting away while the two of them talked about soccer and knitting. The conversation included words like purl!

As I held back giggles at this sweet interaction I was reminded of how wonderful it is to be totally true to yourself, without influence, without judgement or labels.

We grow and we are given ideas on who we are. We grow more and life gives us layers. These layers serve us well and many we will love. I love being a Mom, wife, sister, daughter, friend, yoga teacher.... These are all parts of me, they are not fully me.

I am grateful for children to remind us that we need to show up as we truly are and be accepting of others when they do the same.
